Passing and Receiving Overview
Passing and Receiving
This video covers a core DM Elite session that focuses on developing passing and receiving habits under game-relevant conditions. It’s designed to build rhythm, technical precision, and decision-making across a range of realistic in-possession situations.
The session begins with an unopposed passing pattern, used to establish the correct body shapes, timing, and movements required when receiving and releasing the ball. Key instructions here include:
• Receiving on the back foot to play forward
• Checking shoulders before receiving
• Using a positive first touch to set up the next action
• Playing passes with purpose and clarity (not just keeping the ball moving)
As the session progresses, pressure is gradually introduced - first passive, then active - encouraging players to scan, move off the ball, and support with better angles. Coaches are reminded to look for constant scanning, sharp communication, and players adjusting to the picture in front of them.
The pattern naturally builds repetition into core movements, helping players form habits that translate to match play:
• Midfielders working to create short options and break lines
• Wide players adjusting their runs based on triggers
• Central players opening their body early and playing off minimal touches
Coaches are encouraged to use concise, detail-driven interventions - helping players see how their body shape, movement, or pass detail could improve the overall flow of play. The session finishes with a directional game that rewards quick combinations and forward momentum.
Why this matters:
This session isn’t just about technical repetition, it’s about creating players who understand the tempo and spacing required to move the ball effectively under pressure. Done consistently, it raises the team’s overall intelligence and speed of play.
