Ball Carrying Overview
Ball Carrying
This session is all about improving a player’s ability to carry the ball with purpose - not just dribble aimlessly, but move forward with control, awareness, and intent to affect the game.
The first phase focuses on the technical basics of ball carrying:
• Using the correct foot surfaces (laces for drive, inside for control)
• Taking the ball across the body to protect it from pressure
• Keeping the head up to scan surroundings
• Managing stride and touch size depending on space and pressure
Players work through isolated movements - driving into space, cutting angles, and protecting the ball under light pressure. Coaches should pay close attention to how players:
• Accelerate after their first touch
• Use disguise or changes of direction to shift defenders
• Maintain rhythm while scanning ahead
The session then progresses into game-realistic scenarios like 1v1s and small group exercises. This allows players to apply their ball carrying in context - deciding when to:
• Drive into space versus release early
• Beat a man or create an overload by drawing pressure
• Carry with balance and end product (pass, shot, or continue)
Finally, a conditioned game is used to tie everything together. The game encourages central ball carrying zones or targets, forcing players to recognise when carrying is effective versus when it becomes a risk.
Why this matters:
Ball carrying creates numerical advantages, attracts defenders, and opens space for others. It’s a key part of building confident players who can affect games through movement - not just passing.
