Out of Possession Overview
Out of Possession Principles
This video focuses on building a solid out-of-possession foundation, helping players understand how and when to apply pressure, block passing lanes, and support teammates in defensive transitions.
The session begins with individual technical drills designed to improve footwork, balance, and lateral movement when pressing. Players are reminded to stay compact, low, and ready to react, not just chase.
The first phase introduces 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios where players learn how to:
• Close space quickly without overcommitting
• Angle their body to show the attacker into less dangerous areas
• Time their press to force a mistake or delay play
• React quickly to triggers (e.g. bad touch, sideways pass)
From there, it moves into small group work. Players practice defending as a unit - communicating clearly, managing distances between players, and shifting as a block. Coaches are encouraged to highlight:
• How defenders support each other with cover and balance
• When to press high vs when to sit and protect space
• The importance of pressing with the intent to regain, not just disrupt
The final section introduces a directional game focused on out-of-possession principles - including counter-pressing after losing the ball and reacting instantly to regain shape.
Why this matters:
Without clear defensive roles and habits, teams become disjointed out of possession. This session helps instil repeatable behaviours that lead to better collective shape, smarter pressing, and more frequent ball recoveries.
