Pressure Overview
Applying Pressure
This session builds on previous technical work by introducing a realistic layer of pressure. The aim is to help players adapt to game-like defensive intensity and improve their ability to stay composed, coordinated, and decisive in tight situations.
The session starts with a 1v1 format, focusing on defender shape, angle, and body control. Defenders are taught to slow the attacker down without diving in, using a narrow stance and short steps to stay reactive. Coaching should emphasise the correct distance to close without overcommitting, guiding attackers away from danger zones.
The second phase introduces 2v2s progressing to 4v4s, where players must stay compact and connected. The key focus is defensive line integrity - defenders must hold their structure and avoid getting pulled out of position. Good communication, recovery angles, and collective pressing are the priorities.
Restarts are used frequently to keep the tempo high. The Multi-ball system ensure players are constantly switched on, responding to transitions and applying pressure in waves.
This session reinforces:
• 1v1 defending shape and patience
• How to coordinate pressing with teammates
• Staying compact and not breaking the defensive line
• Immediate reactions to transitions and restarts
This session is best delivered after players have already built technical confidence. The objective is to apply that foundation in high-pressure scenarios that mirror the demands of a real game.
Why this matters:
Defending under pressure is about more than effort - it’s about control, structure, and intelligent movement. Players need to understand when to press, how to delay, and how to work as a unit. Getting this right creates trust across the team and prevents chaos when momentum shifts during games.
